The Junior Section of Calder Valley Fell Runners has been established to provide local young people of all backgrounds and levels of achievement with a happy and rewarding sporting experience in a caring, safe environment. It is hoped that this will enable each young person to realise their potential and encourage them to develop the knowledge, skills and motivation to pursue a successful sporting career and lead a happy, healthy life.
Our coaching style is informed by three simple principles:
- Children come first – winning comes second.
- Sport should be fun.
- Remember to reward effort as well as achievement.
It is intended that the junior section be open to everyone between the ages of 6 and 18; from those who wish to seek to keep fit and have fun to those who wish to compete at the highest level. In this context the Tuesday evening training sessions will be structured to enable all levels of attainment to develop their suppleness, skill, speed, stamina and strength.
At 6 years old it’s at the discretion of the coaches as to whether they can become a member. The last thing we want to do is to put any child off fell running. It often depends on how mature your child is as to whether they can cope with off road running. We recommend that 7 is a better age to start.
When your child first comes to the club they will need to pay £1 a week for a 4 week probation period. This is to ensure that they like fell running and that they are behaving. If they are keen to join it will then be £5. The membership year runs for a full school year (September to July). Junior fell running is not on during any of the school holidays to give all concerned a well earned rest!!! Download the membership form here.
For existing junior members the fee is £7 per school year. This will entitle members to represent the club at races and to attend each training session free. Tuesday evening training sessions will be £1 for each session for non-members.
If your child was a member previously can you please contact our junior co-ordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org) to see if there’s space for them to return as often the juniors are full and there might be a waiting list.
Advice on kit to wear.
Your child’s best grippy trainers is a must for off road running. Especially in winter a windproof/waterproof and full body cover (ie no short or t’shirts please) with gloves and a hat when needed. A head torch and a reflective vest are also a requirement for the dark nights.
We are juniors are NOT responsible for your child’s safety until the juniors set off at 5.45pm so we ask that you stay with your child until then.
